What is Player Efficiency Rating (PER)?

Player Efficiency Rating (PER) is a per-minute productivity metric developed by John Hollinger. It accounts for all box-score contributions (scoring, assists, rebounds, steals, blocks) and penalizes inefficiency (missed shots, turnovers, fouls), normalized against league averages. A league-average PER is 15.0 by definition. For example, an elite player like Nikola Jokic typically posts a PER above 30, while a solid starter averages around 16–18.
