What Is Route Participation?

Route Participation measures the percentage of a team's dropbacks on which a player runs a route. Dropbacks include QB scrambles but exclude plays negated by penalty, matching Offensive QB Dropbacks; it divides by the same team passing plays as Motion Rate, and games a player misses still count against him. This NFL advanced stat is a valuable gauge of passing game involvement: a high route participation rate suggests a primary role in the aerial attack, while a low rate may indicate blocking duties, a rotational role, or limited involvement in certain formations. It can also expose under-the-radar contributors who make the most of their opportunities.
