What Is Motion Rate?

Motion Rate measures the percentage of a team's pass plays on which a player goes in motion before or at the snap — any pre-snap motion counts, not only players still moving when the ball is snapped. It divides by the same team passing plays that Route Participation uses, so the two NFL advanced stats read on the same scale: a high Motion Rate marks a player his offense deliberately moves to create leverage, force coverage tells, or win free releases, while a low rate points to a stationary role. Motion data begins with the 2023 season.
