Perimeter receptions count the catches a receiver made on plays where he lined up outside rather than in the slot. Boundary catches are typically contested, thrown against a cornerback in press or off-man with the sideline as an extra defender, so catch rates here sit below slot rates for almost every receiver in the league. A player with heavy perimeter receptions is winning the version of the job that does not come with scheme help. Slot and perimeter do not cover a receiver's entire route tree -- backfield and in-line snaps are excluded from both boards.
