What Are Perimeter Targets?
Perimeter targets -- outside targets -- count how many passes were thrown to a receiver on plays where he lined up on the boundary rather than in the slot. Outside alignments are where press coverage and a team's top cornerback live, so perimeter volume says something different from slot volume: it is the harder, more contested workload, and the receivers who carry a lot of it are usually the ones an offense trusts to win one-on-one without scheme help. Slot and perimeter totals do not sum to a receiver's full workload -- backfield and in-line snaps belong to neither.
