What is Team Motion Rate?

Team Motion Rate is the percentage of an offense's charted scrimmage plays — passes and rushes — with a player in motion before or at the snap. Any pre-snap motion counts, not only players still moving when the ball is snapped. Heavy-motion offenses use movement to force coverage tells, create leverage and manufacture free releases, so this NFL advanced team stat is a quick read on schematic identity. Not comparable to the player-level Motion Rate, which divides one player's motions by his team's pass plays. Motion data begins with the 2022 season.
