What is 12 Personnel Faced Rate?

12 personnel means one running back, two tight ends and two receivers. 12 personnel faced rate is the share of a defense's charted scrimmage snaps played against that grouping. It is the grouping that forces the hardest personnel decision on a defense: stay in nickel and risk being outmuscled on the ground, or answer with base and let a second tight end who can actually run routes work against a linebacker. A defense seeing a lot of it is being tested on that choice every week. Rates across the published groupings do not sum to 100%, because snaps in groupings without their own page are counted but not shown.
