What is 12 Personnel Rate?

12 personnel means one running back, two tight ends and two receivers. 12 personnel rate is the share of a team's charted scrimmage snaps played from that grouping. It is the league's most common way to stay balanced: heavy enough to run against a light box, but with enough receiving threats that a defense which answers it with base personnel can be thrown on. Teams that live in 12 usually have a second tight end who can block in line and win as a receiver. Rates across the published groupings do not sum to 100%, because snaps in groupings without their own page are counted but not shown.
